SHV Energy and LanzaTech partnered in 2022 to employ LanzaTech’s Carbon Capture and Transformation technology to help bring renewable propane and other sustainable fuels to market.

Futuria Fuels sees a sustainable future for the liquid fuels industry. We are already collaborating across the energy sector and beyond, with academics and technology providers, to make it happen.

The greatest challenge for off-grid fuel supply is finding viable sustainable fuel alternatives, such as bioLPG and recycled and renewable dimethyl ether (rDME), for the wide range of commercial, industrial and residential applications that exist today.

Together with our partners, Futuria Fuels are developing multiple pathways for affordable on-purpose production of sustainable molecules at volume.

Our solutions
BioLPG, rLPG, and renewable propane all describe sustainable liquid gas, an effective alternative to LPG that offers up to 80% less CO2. With contemporary methods, bioLPG is a byproduct of other fuels, such as renewable diesel and sustainable aviation fuel. Futuria Fuels offer bioLPG sourced from these processes to customers across Europe.

We are also pursuing the on-purpose production of bioLPG. For example, through novel technologies, proprietary catalysts and even carbon capture and transformation. We are actively researching sustainable, locally available feedstocks to deliver the highest yields of bioLPG. One exciting area we are exploring involves using renewable electricity to produce synthetic or electric LPG, known as eLPG.

Similarly, we are pursuing the on-purpose production of rDME, a Liquid Gas like LPG that is produced from renewable and recycled feedstock. rDME can be blended with LPG, bioLPG or used on its own, unblended. This enables equipment that is powered by LPG to work with the blend, with little to no modification. Futuria Fuels are seeking partnerships to rapidly expand the range of effective methods of production and deliver increasing volumes of this exciting fuel.

Our collaborators
Futuria Fuels works with technology partners around the world, such as LanzaTech and GTI Energy, to turn science into affordable operations. We collaborate to build facilities and begin the process of scaling up the production of bioLPG and alternative fuels such as rDME and hydrogen. We arere looking for technology partners who have ideas to aid with carbon capture, repurposing, and storage.

We also work with academic partners, such as Aston University and Ulster University, to explore promising new routes to high yield bioLPG production. These efforts have the potential to create a massive impact on the availability of this defossilised, clean fuel for the off-grid fuel market.

"Our purpose is to be ‘the’ off-grid energy expert and to innovate viable solutions for renewable Liquid Gas production all around the world,” says Rebecca Groen, CEO of Futuria Fuels. “We’re excited to build on our experience and drive new ways of thinking. And with our very strong knowledge and interest in this area, it’s not just work to us – it’s also our passion.”

Futuria Fuels

Futuria Fuels was founded by SHV Energy to lead the global advocacy of sustainable molecules. SHV Energy has been safely delivering energy to customers around the world for more than 125 years. With a view to the future and demonstrating ‘Courage to care for generations to come,’ SHV Energy pioneered the introduction of bioLPG in 2018 and established Futuria Fuels in 2023 to pursue opportunities to scale-up production.

SHV Energy and Futuria Fuels believe that sustainable liquid fuels will play an essential role in contributing to the achievement of global sustainability and net-zero targets.
