The State of Renewable Propane (Renewable Liquid Gas) in the U.S.

The Propane Education & Research Council (PERC) is committed to the research and development of clean propane solutions that Americans trust today and will rely on tomorrow. At the 2023 Renewable Propane Summit in Denver, Colorado, PERC gathered members of the energy sector, both private and public, including representatives from five large biorefineries, the propane industry, the National Propane Gas Association, the US Department of Energy, regulatory consulting firms, and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory to explore the full potential of renewable propane – a drop-in energy source with one of the lowest carbon intensity scores that can drastically reduce emissions in on-road and off-road sectors.

The main objectives of the summit were to brainstorm pathways to increase production of renewable propane and to identify barriers to renewable propane growth.

Estimating accurate volumes of renewable propane currently on the US market can be challenging. The closest estimate can be obtained from EPA’s Renewable Identification Number (RINs) transaction data, a compliance requirement for achieving credits.

In 2023, a total of 4,818,859 D5 RINs were transacted yielding a total of 4,380,780 gallons of renewable LPG (or renewable propane). Renewable LPG qualifies for Advanced Biofuel D5 RINs, which is typically applicable to non-corn starch and renewable biomass and must meet a 50% lifecycle greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction relative to benchmark fuels (i.e. gasoline and diesel). D5 RINs were trading at $1.3 on January 22, 2024.
